چکیده

Imaging techniques allow in vivo measurement of parameters studied in vitro or ex vivo and thus greater reliability regarding muscle mechanics in real situations. Some muscle architecture parameters are directly related to force production, mainly the volume. It can be estimated by the sum of segmental volumes (product of the sum of crosssectional areas and the distance between them) of sequential images obtained from magnetic resonance imaging. Ultrasound has also been used to obtain the volume utilizing regression equations or the same method as in magnetic resonance images. However, the prolonged time for acquisition and processing many images can be a limiting factor. Therefore, this paper presents a model based on the Cavalieri ́s principle to estimate the rectus femoris volume. Different estimations of a phantom volume were performed with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 cross-sectional images to define a protocol with the minimum number of images sufficient for a reliable estimate. The 4 slices prediction approached the experimental value with a mean error of 1.12%.

Three-dimensional muscle-tendon geometry after rectus femoris tendon transfer.

BACKGROUND Rectus femoris tendon transfer is performed in patients with cerebral palsy to improve knee flexion during walking. This procedure involves detachment of the muscle from its insertion into the quadriceps tendon and reattachment to one of the knee flexor muscles. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the muscle-tendon geometry and to assess the formation of scar tissue betw...

Relationships between Muscle Architecture of Rectus Femoris and Functional Parameters of Knee Motion in Adults with Down Syndrome

This study was designed to measure in vivo muscle architecture of the rectus femoris in adults with Down syndrome, testing possible relationships with functional parameters of the knee motion. Ten adults with Down syndrome and ten typically developed participated in the study. Pennation angle and thickness of the rectus femoris and subcutaneous layer of the thigh were measured via ultrasound im...

Prediction of muscular architecture of the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis from EMG during isometric contractions in soccer players

OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to establish regression equations that could be used to predict muscle thickness and pennation angle at different intensities from electromyography (EMG) based measures of muscle activation during isometric contractions. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Simultaneous ultrasonography and EMG were used to measure pennation angle, muscle thickness an...

Echo intensity of the rectus femoris in stable COPD patients

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate whether echo intensity of the rectus femoris when measured using ultrasound can distinguish muscles affected by COPD compared with healthy non-COPD affected muscles and whether the severity of ultrasonic abnormalities was associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL). METHODS Echo intensity, areas of the rectus femoris, and the thick...
